The Emotional Power of Music

Original Synopsis

"The Emotional Power of Music has a total of 392 pages which are papers from writer 'Tom Cochrane, Bernardino Fantini, Klaus R. Scherer'. How can an abstract sequence of sounds so intensely express emotional states? How does music elicit or arouse our emotions? What happens at the physiological and neural level when we listen to music? How do composers and performers practically manage the expressive powers of music? How have societies sought to harness the powers of music for social or therapeutic purposes? In the past ten years, research into the topic of music and emotion has flourished. In addition, the relationship between the two has become of interest to a broad range of disciplines in both the sciences and humanities. The Emotional Power of Music is a multidisciplinary volume exploring the relationship between music and emotion. Bringing together contributions from psychologists, neuroscientists, musicologists, musicians, and philosophers, the volume presents both theoretical perspectives and in-depth explorations of particular musical works, as well as first-hand reports from music performers and composers. In the first section of the book, the authors consider the expression of emotion within music, through both performance and composing. The second section explores how music can stimulate the emotions, considering the psychological and neurological mechanisms that underlie music listening. The third section explores how different societes have sought to manage and manipulate the power of music. The book is valuable for those in the fields of music psychology and music education, as well as philosophy and musicology 2013-07-18 time of publication of the book, [-OUP Oxford-]"

Chasing the Rising Sun

Original Synopsis

"Chasing the Rising Sun has a total of 336 pages which are papers from writer 'Ted Anthony'. Chasing the Rising Sun is the story of an American musical journey told by a prize-winning writer who traced one song in its many incarnations as it was carried across the world by some of the most famous singers of the twentieth century. Most people know the song "House of the Rising Sun" as 1960s rock by the British Invasion group the Animals, a ballad about a place in New Orleans -- a whorehouse or a prison or gambling joint that's been the ruin of many poor girls or boys. Bob Dylan did a version and Frijid Pink cut a hard-rocking rendition. But that barely scratches the surface; few songs have traveled a journey as intricate as "House of the Rising Sun." The rise of the song in this country and the launch of its world travels can be traced to Georgia Turner, a poor, sixteen-year-old daughter of a miner living in Middlesboro, Kentucky, in 1937 when the young folk-music collector Alan Lomax, on a trip collecting field recordings, captured her voice singing "The Rising Sun Blues." Lomax deposited the song in the Library of Congress and included it in the 1941 book Our Singing Country. In short order, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lead Belly, and Josh White learned the song and each recorded it. From there it began to move to the planet's farthest corners. Today, hundreds of artists have recorded "House of the Rising Sun," and it can be heard in the most diverse of places -- Chinese karaoke bars, Gatorade ads, and as a ring tone on cell phones. Anthony began his search in New Orleans, where he met Eric Burdon of the Animals. He traveled to the Appalachians -- to eastern Kentucky, eastern Tennessee, and western North Carolina -- to scour the mountains for the song's beginnings. He found Homer Callahan, who learned it in the mountains during a corn shucking; he discovered connections to Clarence "Tom" Ashley, who traveled as a performer in a 1920s medicine show. He went to Daisy, Kentucky, to visit the family of the late high-lonesome singer Roscoe Holcomb, and finally back to Bourbon Street to see if there really was a House of the Rising Sun. He interviewed scores of singers who performed the song. Through his own journey he discovered how American traditions survived and prospered -- and how a piece of culture moves through the modern world, propelled by technology and globalization and recorded sound. 2007-07-13 time of publication of the book, [-Simon and Schuster-]"

Gregory the Great

Original Synopsis

"Gregory the Great has a total of 328 pages which are papers from writer ''. Gregory the Great (+604) was a master of the art of exegesis. His interpretations are theologically profound, methodologically fascinating, and historically influential. Nowhere is this more clearly seen than in his exegesis of the Song of Songs. Gregory’s interpretation of this popular Old Testament book not only owes much to Christian exegetes who preceded him, such as Origen, but also profoundly influenced later Western Latin exegetes, such as Bernard of Clairvaux. This volume includes all that Gregory had to say on the Song of Songs: his Exposition on the Song of Songs, the florilegia compiled by Paterius (Gregory’s secretary) and the Venerable Bede, and, finally, William of Saint Thierry’s Excerpts from the Books of Blessed Gregory on the Song of Songs. It is now the key resource for reading and studying Gregory’s interpretation of the Song of Songs. 2012-04-01 time of publication of the book, [-Liturgical Press-]"

Is There A God? Hell, Yeah!

Original Synopsis

"Is There A God? Hell, Yeah! has a total of 248 pages which are papers from writer 'Jodi Faith'. Jodi Faith doesn't want the world to hear her story from a “soap box” perspective, but rather in a way that lives may be changed by it. It’s her simple story – take it or leave it... A story about a God who pursued a quiet, broken sparrow and showed her He’d loved her since before time began. A story worthy of being told... — Charlotte Reed This is a bold work, intimate and entertaining. The casual-toned narrative is interspersed with Jodi’s song lyrics and pertinent Biblical verses. It is a story that is both deeply personal and relatable. A brave work. Jodi Faith is to be commended for her tenacity both in life and in sharing her story! — Sarah Stewart Jodi Faith reveals herself in this compelling story of lost- and found-ness. Her unabashed truth takes one’s breath away at times and stirs concern about the vulnerability of such exposure. This book is proof that everyone has an important story to tell because everyone is important to our Creator certainly, to each other essentially. The reader becomes privy to the transformative process Faith undergoes as her narrative unfolds without shame or blame in order to proclaim God’s grace in her life. Faith was driven to her knees countless times by life circumstances, but as often to praise and give thanks as otherwise. This story is far from over. — Jacqueline Chartrand Connect with international recording artist, speaker and media personality Jodi and Robert Faith (husband and business partner) at 2015-01-02 time of publication of the book, [-FriesenPress-]"

Original Synopsis

"Juncture has a total of 280 pages which are papers from writer 'Lara Stapleton, Veronica Gonzalez'. Ironic, rebellious, and sexy, this collection of short stories and illustrations reflects not only the jagged rhythms of contemporary American writing but also of American life itself with all its hyphenations, its immigrants, and its migrants. Some of the contributing writers are absurdist, some stream-of-consciousness, some science fiction, and some based in rhythm with the influence of poetry. Original art and drawings illustrate or respond to each story and reflect the kinds of cultural hybridization that has driven many of these writers. The works of such vibrant writers and artists as Jonathan Lethem, Heather McGowan, Colson Whitehead, Alex Shakar, Carl Hancock Rux, Ben Marcus, Said Shirazi, Jorge Pardo, Chris Ofili, Frances Stark, and Jon Plypchuck aka Rudy Bust are included. 2003-12-19 time of publication of the book, [-Soft Skull Press-]"
