The Rise and Fall of Adam and Eve

Original Synopsis

"The Rise and Fall of Adam and Eve has a total of 432 pages which are papers from writer 'Stephen Greenblatt'. Humans cannot live without stories. But one story has proved itself the most durable and hauntingly real of all time. The mythic tale of Adam and Eve has shaped conceptions of human origins and destiny for centuries. Stemming from a few verses in an ancient book, it became not just the foundation of three major world faiths, but has evolved through art, philosophy and science to serve as the mirror in which we seem to glimpse the whole, long history of our fears and desires. What is it about Adam and Eve’s story that fascinates us? What does it tell us about how our species lives, dies, works or has sex? In a quest that begins at the dawn of time, Stephen Greenblatt takes us from ancient Babylonia to the forests of east Africa. We meet evolutionary biologists and fossilised ancestors; we grapple with morality and marriage in Milton’s Paradise Lost; and we decide if the Fall is the unvarnished truth or fictional allegory. Ultimately, The Rise and Fall of Adam and Eve allows us a new understanding of ourselves. 2017-09-14 time of publication of the book, [-Random House-]"

Original Synopsis

"Last of the Giants has a total of 272 pages which are papers from writer 'Jeff Campbell, Adam Grano'. Today, an ancient world is vanishing right before our eyes: the age of giant animals. Over 40,000 years ago, the earth was ruled by megafauna: mammoths and mastodons, saber-toothed tigers and giant sloths. Of course, those creatures no longer exist, due to the evolution and arrival of the wildly adaptive human species, among other factors. Many more of the world's biggest and baddest creatures - including the black rhino, the dodo, giant tortoises, and the great auk - have vanished since our world became truly global. Last of the Giants chronicles those giant animals and apex predators who have been pushed to extinction in the modern era. 2016-03-01 time of publication of the book, [-Zest Books-]"

The rise and fall of Japan's LDP

Original Synopsis

"The rise and fall of Japan's LDP has a total of 320 pages which are papers from writer 'Ellis S. Krauss, Robert J. Pekkanen'. After holding power continuously from its inception in 1955 (with the exception of a ten-month hiatus in 1993-1994), Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lost control of the national government decisively in September 2009. Despite its defeat, the LDP remains the most successful political party in a democracy in the post-World War II period. In The Rise and Fall of Japan's LDP, Ellis S. Krauss and Robert J. Pekkanen shed light on the puzzle of the LDP's long dominance and abrupt defeat. Several questions about institutional change in party politics are at the core of their investigation: What incentives do different electoral systems provide? How do politicians adapt to new incentives? How much does structure determine behavior, and how much opportunity does structure give politicians to influence outcomes? How adaptable are established political organizations? The electoral system Japan established in 1955 resulted in a half-century of "one-party democracy." But as Krauss and Pekkanen detail, sweeping political reforms in 1994 changed voting rules and other key elements of the electoral system. Both the LDP and its adversaries had to adapt to a new system that gave citizens two votes: one for a party and one for a candidate. Under the leadership of the charismatic Koizumi Junichiro, the LDP managed to maintain its majority in the Japanese Diet, but his successors lost popular support as opposing parties learned how to operate in the new electoral environment. Drawing on the insights of historical institutionalism, Krauss and Pekkanen explain how Japanese politics functioned before and after the 1994 reform and why the persistence of party institutions (factions, PARC, koenkai) and the transformed role of party leadership contributed both to the LDP's success at remaining in power for fifteen years after the reforms and to its eventual downfall. In an epilogue, the authors assess the LDP's prospects in the near and medium term. 2010-11-04 time of publication of the book, [-Cornell University Press-]"

Original Synopsis

"Swordfighting, for Writers, Game Designers, and Martial Artists has a total of 288 pages which are papers from writer 'Guy Windsor'. From the Foreword by Neal Stephenson: "Whether you are a writer or game-maker seeking the kind of information I sought while writing The Baroque Cycle, or just a general reader with an interest in the arts to which Guy Windsor has dedicated his career, you should find much that is rewarding in these pages." This book is a collection of essays and articles, about half of which have been adapted from Guy's successful blog, at guywindsor.com, the rest have never been published before. It is in eight sections: "What is Historical Swordsmanship?" covers some aspects of researching and recreating the Art. "Martial Essentials" covers some of the less-well-understood aspects of what martial arts are and how they work. "Lessons from the Art" covers some of the wider real-world benefits of training, especially dealing with questions of mistakes, risk, and fear. "Swords" describes the main classifications of the weapons we use, and includes discussion of appropriate training tools. "Fighting" includes historical examples of duels, and discussions about the nature of real violence. "Writing Swordfights" is about how swords and swordfights should be represented in fiction, with examples of fights done both well and badly. "Gaming" is a discussion of the ways in which swordsmanship can be adapted for game design purpose. "Training" includes key insights into how we train swordsmanship." 2015-03-15 time of publication of the book, [--]"
