No One Is Coming to Save Us

Original Synopsis

"No One Is Coming to Save Us has a total of 384 pages which are papers from writer 'Stephanie Powell Watts'. 'No One Is Coming to Save Us marks the arrival of a wonderfully gifted new American writer. JJ, Ava and Sylvia are easy characters to fall in love with, and Stephanie Powell Watts brings them to life with warmth and generosity. I can't wait to share their story, their search for fulfillment and attempts to better understand their past and shape their future, with readers everywhere, and I'm jealous of all who will open to page one for the first time.' Sarah Jessica Parker JJ Ferguson has returned home to Pinewood, North Carolina, to build his dream house and to pursue his high school sweetheart, Ava. But as he reenters his former world, where factories are in decline and the legacy of Jim Crow is still felt, he's startled to find that the people he once knew and loved have changed just as much as he has. Ava is now married and desperate for a baby, though she can't seem to carry one to term. Her husband, Henry, has grown distant, frustrated by the demise of the furniture industry, which has outsourced to China and stripped the area of jobs. Ava's mother, Sylvia, caters to and meddles with the lives of those around her, trying to fill the void left by her absent son. And Don, Sylvia's unworthy but charming husband, just won't stop hanging around. JJ's return-and his plans to build a huge mansion overlooking Pinewood and woo Ava-not only unsettles their family, but stirs up the entire town. The ostentatious wealth that JJ has attained forces everyone to consider the cards they've been dealt, what more they want and deserve, and how they might go about getting it. Can they reorient their lives to align with their wishes rather than their current realities? Or are they all already resigned to the rhythms of the particular lives they lead? No One Is Coming to Save Us is a revelatory debut from an insightful voice; with echoes of The Great Gatsby it is an arresting and powerful novel about an extended African American family and their colliding visions of the American Dream. In evocative prose, Stephanie Powell Watts has crafted a full and stunning portrait that combines a universally resonant story with an intimate glimpse into the hearts of one family. 2018-01-02 time of publication of the book, [-Penguin UK-]"

We Are Taking Only What We Need

Original Synopsis

"We Are Taking Only What We Need has a total of 240 pages which are papers from writer 'Stephanie Powell Watts'. In these powerfully rendered, prizewinning stories, working-class African Americans across the South strive for meaning and search for direction in lives shaped by forces beyond their control The ten stories in this resonant collection deal with both the ties that bind and the gulf that separates generations, from children confronting the fallibility of their own parents for the first time to adults finding themselves forced to start over again and again. In “Highway 18” a young Jehovah’s Witness going door to door with an expert field-service partner from up north is at a crossroads: will she go to college or continue to serve the church? “If You Hit Randall County, You’ve Gone Too Far” tells of a family trying to make it through a tense celebratory dinner for a son just out on bail. And in the collection’s title story, a young girl experiences loss for the first time in the fallout from her father’s relationship with her babysitter. Startling, intimate, and prescient on their own, these stories build to a kaleidoscopic understanding of both the individual and the collective black experience over the last fifty years in the American South. With We Are Taking Only What We Need, Stephanie Powell Watts has crafted an incredibly assured and emotionally affecting meditation on everything from the large institutional forces to the small interpersonal moments that impress upon us and direct our lives. 2018-02-06 time of publication of the book, [-HarperCollins-]"

HIV Pioneers

Original Synopsis

"HIV Pioneers has a total of 272 pages which are papers from writer 'Wendee M. Wechsberg'. Tremendous strides have been made in the prevention and treatment of HIV since the disease first appeared in the 1980s. But because many of the people who studied and battled the virus in those early days are now gone, firsthand accounts are at risk of being lost. In HIV Pioneers, Wendee M. Wechsberg collects 29 "first stories" from the outset of the AIDS epidemic. These moving personal narratives and critical historical essays not only shed light on the experiences of global health pioneers, prominent scientists, and HIV survivors, but also preserve valuable lessons for managing the risk and impact of future epidemics. With unprecedented access to many key actors in the fight against AIDS and HIV, Wechsberg brings to life the harrowing reality of those early days of the epidemic. The book captures the experiences of those still working diligently and innovatively in the field, elevating the voices of doctors, scientists, and government bureaucrats alongside those of survivors and their loved ones. Focusing on the impact that the epidemic had on careers, pieces also show how governments responded to HIV, how research agendas were developed, and how AIDS service agencies and case management evolved. Illuminating the multiple facets of the HIV epidemic, both in the United States and across the globe, HIV Pioneers is a touching and inspirational look into the ongoing fight against HIV. Original Synopsis

"Alive has a total of 368 pages which are papers from writer 'Scott Sigler'. #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • For fans of The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Red Rising comes a gripping sci-fi adventure in which a group of teenagers wake up in a mysterious corridor with no knowledge of who they are or how they got trapped. Their only hope lies with an indomitable young woman who must lead them not only to answers but to survival. “I open my eyes to darkness. Total darkness. I hear my own breathing, but nothing else. I lift my head . . . it thumps against something solid and unmoving. There is a board right in front of my face. No, not a board . . . a lid.” A teenage girl awakens to find herself trapped in a coffin. She has no idea who she is, where she is, or how she got there. Fighting her way free brings little relief—she discovers only a room lined with caskets and a handful of equally mystified survivors. Beyond their room lies a corridor filled with bones and dust, but no people . . . and no answers. She knows only one thing about herself—her name, M. Savage, which was engraved on the foot of her coffin—yet she finds herself in charge. She is not the biggest among them, or the boldest, but for some reason the others trust her. Now, if they’re to have any chance, she must get them to trust one another. Whatever the truth is, she is determined to find it and confront it. If she has to lead, she will make sure they survive. Maybe there’s a way out, a rational explanation, and a fighting chance against the dangers to come. Or maybe a reality they cannot comprehend lies just beyond the next turn. Praise for Alive “Suspenseful . . . [Alive] lives up to its hype, packing plenty of thrills.”—Entertainment Weekly “Fascinating and intriguing . . . a cross between Lord of the Flies and The Maze Runner and yet . . . so much more.”—Fresh Fiction “A ripping, claustrophobic thunderbolt of a novel, Scott Sigler’s Alive gives us an unforgettable young hero who must find the inner strength to lead without knowing where she is, who she is, and how bitterly the odds are stacked against her.”—Pierce Brown, New York Times bestselling author of Red Rising “Sigler has created a wonderful and engrossing character in M. Savage. Strong and smart, but with the naïveté and misgivings of any teenage girl, she’s someone you’ll definitely want on your side when s*** hits the fan, which it most certainly does.”—Veronica Belmont, host of Sword & Laser “A tense, unsettling page-turner of a story—both deeply strange and wildly compelling.”—Cherie Priest, author of Boneshaker and Maplecroft “From the first page I was hooked. The puzzle unfolds masterfully, right down to the last page.”—Dr. Phil Plait, author of Bad Astronomy From the Hardcover edition. 2015-07-14 time of publication of the book, [-Del Rey-]"

Autoworkers Under the Gun

Original Synopsis

"Autoworkers Under the Gun has a total of 200 pages which are papers from writer 'Gregg Shotwell'. Workers' rights are not defined by law or contract. Workers' rights are defined by struggle. Gregg Shotwell’s Live Bait & Ammo newsletter chronicled the outrages and absurdities of corporate managers, exposed union leaders who acted in “partnership” with employers, and sounded the alarm about the devastating effects of auto industry job losses and union concessions. LB&A fliers grew legs of their own, distributed by rank-and-file workers in auto plants across the United States and cited by industry analysts. This collection spans a decade of autoworker resistance—and it’s a call to action for a new generation of workers coming of age in recession-wracked America. 2012-02-14 time of publication of the book, [-Haymarket Books-]"

The Best American Poetry 2014

Original Synopsis

"The Best American Poetry 2014 has a total of 240 pages which are papers from writer 'David Lehman, Terrance Hayes'. Edited by the National Book Award-winning poet Terrance Hayes, the foremost annual anthology of contemporary American poetry returns: “A ‘best’ anthology that really lives up to its title” (Chicago Tribune). The first book of poetry that Terrance Hayes ever bought was the 1990 edition of The Best American Poetry, edited by Jorie Graham. Hayes was then an undergrad at a small South Carolina college. He has since published four highly honored books of poetry, is a professor of poetry at the University of Pittsburgh, has appeared multiple times in the series, and is one of today’s most decorated poets. His brazen, restless poems capture the diversity of American culture with singular artistry, grappling with facile assumptions about identity and the complex repercussions of race history in this country. Always eagerly anticipated, the 2014 volume of The Best American Poetry begins with David Lehman’s “state-of-the-art” foreword followed by an inspired introduction from Terrance Hayes on his picks for the best American poems of the past year. Following the poems is the apparatus for which the series has won acclaim: notes from the poets about the writing of their poems. 2014-09-09 time of publication of the book, [-Simon and Schuster-]"

Big Oil in Small Town America

Original Synopsis

"Big Oil in Small Town America has a total of 140 pages which are papers from writer 'Jaime L. Long'. This book started as a result of four ordinary people seeing something wrong in their small tourist community and tried to right it. Who would have thought that our government would subject its own people to the damaging emissions of the oil and gas industry? This book is about the fight of four people fighting the oil companies and the Local, State and Federal governmental agencies charged with protecting its citizens. It is seen through the eyes of one of the group, who has had a stroke and contributed to the "fight" by sending out hundreds of email newsletters almost weekly. The fight to save a community's way of life was marred with disillusionment and frustration, but they continued to fight. In Lewiston and surrounding area there are roughly 5000 gas and oil wells along with their associated facilities. The particular offloading facility the group focused on was emitting illegal amounts of Hydrogen Sulfide and Sulfur Dioxide and no one was stopping them. Lewiston was downwind from this facility most days. The local, state and federal governments were fighting us. They threw up road blocks every way we turned as if they didn't want us to know what was really going on. Why? Because of the many lies that the group uncovered as to what was really happening at the facility. Local citizens were looking the other way. Others were calling us crazy or to just leave the problem alone! Did they have oil/gas wells on their property, possibly collecting royalties? The group has hundreds of pages of transcripts, videotapes and photographs to prove otherwise. The Citizens Against Environmental Destruction, as we came to call ourselves, were fighting an uphill battle, but battle we did and are continuing to do to save our lives and our community. Too many health problems. Too many deaths. Why? Read and hope this never happens to your community. The knowledge of how our government works to protect us (they don´t) was so disappointing. 2006-04-01 time of publication of the book, []"

They have issues and problems their uncle sees that they are crazy about these boys and they might even be in love with these boys but some of them have baggage and he decides to help them with their problems and their habits for his nieces sakes. He finds the lady of his dreams during the process and so does his sons. The men from Washington DC have taken on a contract for the company and in one year they will get the contract or lose it either way the Uncle's will be a winner. The guys show their talents but will they get the contract and the girls they have fallen madly in love with and changed their ways too. We also find out they arent the only ones looking for good men and women. We all have a past that we may not be proud of but we all can look to the future for change if we only try hard to do whats right. The future will be a big picture for all of us if we only look, listen and do what thus said the Lord says. This is just my opinion and I am not criticizing anyone in this story. We all have sin and I cannot point my figure at anyone unless I point it at myself sin is sin no matter how big or small in the eyes of the Lord. This book is to inspire those who will read it and have an open mind. The Lord wants us all to take inventory on ourselves and be mindful and not judge others. I really hope you all will enjoy what you have read. May the Lord guide you on your way to happiness and more? 2013-10-07 time of publication of the book, [-Xlibris Corporation-]"
