14 Hollow Road

Original Synopsis

"14 Hollow Road has a total of 288 pages which are papers from writer 'Jenn Bishop'. A warm coming-of-age novel about a community banding together in the wake of a tornado, perfect for fans of reader favorites like Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt and Lost in the Sun by Lisa Graff. The night of the sixth-grade dance is supposed to be perfect for Maddie: she’ll wear her perfect new dress, hit the dance floor with her friends, and her crush, Avery, will ask her to dance. But as the first slow song starts to play, her plans crumble. Avery asks someone else to dance instead—and then the power goes out. Huddled in the gym, Maddie and her friends are stunned to hear that a tornado has ripped through the other side of town, destroying both Maddie’s and Avery’s homes. Kind neighbors open up their home to Maddie’s and Avery’s families, which both excites and horrifies Maddie. Sharing the same house . . . with Avery? For the entire summer? While it buys her some time to prove that Avery made the wrong choice at the dance, it also means he’ll be there to witness her morning breath and her annoying little brother. At the dance, all she wanted was to be more grown-up. Now that she has no choice, is she really ready for it? Praise for 14 Hollow Road: "Bishop nails the tween voice: Maddie is a realistic heroine who deals with typical middle-grade problems amidst disaster, and she navigates upheavals with occasional grace and more frequent missteps."--Booklist "The emotional impact of this coming-of-age novel lies in its sensitive exploration of Maddie’s changing friendships in the transition from elementary school to junior high...Readers going through the messy transition into adolescence will find hope in the newly strengthened friendships with which Maddie enters seventh grade."--The Bulletin "The hopeful tone and conversational writing style make this an accessible read."--SLJ “This gorgeous summer tale will hit the spot with fans of The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall and Gertie’s Leap to Greatness by Kate Beasley.” —Erin E. Run a Hollow Road

Original Synopsis

"Run a Hollow Road has a total of 196 pages which are papers from writer 'Dolores Pala'. DOLORES PALA was born and grew up in New York. She first went to Paris at the age of twenty where she still lives. She worked with the United Nations and with an organization dealing with exiles from Central Europe during the icy early years of the Cold War from which she derived the colorful, taut atmosphere of Vienna that is the background to Run A Hollow Road. She describes young Americans abroad then, so different from Hemingway's characters, in a Europe dangerously torn by conflicting ideologies, a long way from the Charleston. And she shows how the fifties bore little resemblance to the twenties. Yet the young Americans abroad she introduces us to are endearing, even flamboyant, enjoying the freedom of Europe, bent on fulfilling themselves no matter what the social climate of the times. Each in his own way and in radically different voices, introduce us to a yesterday we have almost forgotten and an innocence barely lost. RUN A HOLLOW ROAD is her third novel. It takes place in Vienna and spans a decade of international intrigue and contending ideologies at a nerve center in our divided world. The characters are young and American, the background is old and very European. It is a novel of contrasts, tenderness and tension, commitment and elusiveness. It introduces us to life-sized characters and a few who prove to be outsized and everlasting. It is a portrait of a period and after reading it we are enriched. 2003-11-01 time of publication of the book, [-iUniverse-]"

The Bell Hollow Road Ax Murders

Original Synopsis

"The Bell Hollow Road Ax Murders has a total of 3 pages which are papers from writer 'Drac Von Stoller'. This story goes back to the early nineteenth century in a small town called Willow Oaks. Abraham and his family owned the majority of Willow Oaks farm land until a shrewd business man by the name of Jasper bought a small patch of land near Abraham's farm. It wasn't long before jealousy set in and being that Jasper was a smart man and Abraham wasn't he used it to his advantage to swindle Abraham out of the majority of his land but when Abraham didn't receive the money promised to him by Jasper he threatened to kill him. Instead of Jasper making good on his promise and pay the money that was owed to Abraham he decided to shut Abraham up for good. The following morning Jasper went to the hardware store to purchase an ax thinking that would solve everything and being that it was a small town nobody would ever find out he did the dirty deed. Around mid afternoon Jasper saddled his horse up and rode to Abraham's farm house to tell him he would have his money by morning, but he knew very well he didn't have the money to pay him for the land. Being that Abraham trusted everyone he believed the lies that Jasper fed him and trusted the money would be in his hands by morning. The only reason Jasper rode out to his farm wasn't about reassuring Abraham he would get his money but to case out his house and property so when nightfall came he would come back with his ax and finish off his family. time of publication of the book, [-Drac Von Stoller-]"

Stony Brook

Original Synopsis

"Stony Brook has a total of 128 pages which are papers from writer ''. Stony Brook is remarkable for the abundance of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century buildings still in use. Much of the old hamlet remains in the streets leading up to and out of its center; few twentieth-century structures interrupt the progression of homes of the farmers, craftsmen, and seamen who were the backbone of the community. The center itself dates from 1940 and is an interpretation of Federal architecture. Using photographs, documents, and oral histories from the archives of the Three Village Historical Society and from generous residents, Stony Brook reveals the old center, portrays buildings that no longer exist, and follows other structures to their new location. The book also shows many familiar buildings in much earlier but still recognizable form, revisits aspects of village life prior to World War II, and documents the transformations of 1940 to 1946. 2003 time of publication of the book, [-Arcadia Publishing-]"

Making Mountains

Original Synopsis

"Making Mountains has a total of 336 pages which are papers from writer 'David Stradling'. For over two hundred years, the Catskill Mountains have been repeatedly and dramatically transformed by New York City. In Making Mountains, David Stradling shows the transformation of the Catskills landscape as a collaborative process, one in which local and urban hands, capital, and ideas have come together to reshape the mountains and the communities therein. This collaboration has had environmental, economic, and cultural consequences. Early on, the Catskills were an important source of natural resources. Later, when New York City needed to expand its water supply, engineers helped direct the city toward the Catskills, claiming that the mountains offered the purest and most cost-effective waters. By the 1960s, New York had created the great reservoir and aqueduct system in the mountains that now supplies the city with 90 percent of its water. The Catskills also served as a critical space in which the nation's ideas about nature evolved. Stradling describes the great influence writers and artists had upon urban residents - especially the painters of the Hudson River School, whose ideal landscapes created expectations about how rural America should appear. By the mid-1800s, urban residents had turned the Catskills into an important vacation ground, and by the late 1800s, the Catskills had become one of the premiere resort regions in the nation. In the mid-twentieth century, the older Catskill resort region was in steep decline, but the Jewish "Borscht Belt" in the southern Catskills was thriving. The automobile revitalized mountain tourism and residence, and increased the threat of suburbanization of the historic landscape. Throughout each of these significant incarnations, urban and rural residents worked in a rough collaboration, though not without conflict, to reshape the mountains and American ideas about rural landscapes and nature. 2009-11-23 time of publication of the book, [-University of Washington Press-]"

The Old Straight Track

Original Synopsis

"The Old Straight Track has a total of 400 pages which are papers from writer 'Alfred Watkins'. A beautiful new edition of a classic work of landscape history, in which Alfred Watkins introduced the idea of ancient 'ley lines' criss-crossing the English countryside. First published in 1925, THE OLD STRAIGHT TRACK described the author's theory of 'ley lines', pre-Roman pathways consisting of aligned stone circles and prehistoric mounds, used by our Neolithic ancestors. Watkins's ideas have intrigued and inspired generations of readers – from historians to hill walkers, and from amateur archaeologists to new-age occultists. This edition of THE OLD STRAIGHT TRACK, with a substantial introduction by Robert Macfarlane, will appeal to all who treasure the history, contours and mystery of Britain's ancient landscapes. 2014-09-11 time of publication of the book, [-Head of Zeus-]"

The Killer in the Back Seat (Urban Legend)

Original Synopsis

"The Killer in the Back Seat (Urban Legend) has a total of 1 pages which are papers from writer 'Drac Von Stoller'. If you ever find yourself driving down Old Hollow Road after midnight, whatever you do, don't say these words "The old man's on fire," three times or your will end up like all the rest. That's exactly what happened to Johnny Waters. Johnny wasn't afraid of a legend, especially because he never heard of anyone dying on Old Hollow Road. Johnny's grandfather told him that there was an old man that lived in the woods across from Old Hollow Road. Legend has it that a group of young teenagers had been drinking heavily and decided to play a prank on the old man. The teenagers didn't like the old man because he would run them off his property with his shotgun. This just made them angry. They wanted to teach the old man a lesson. The old man's property was their favorite place to camp out because it was secluded deep in the woods. One day when the group of teenagers came by the old man's property after dark they decided it was time to teach the old man a lesson. One of the teenagers went back to his car to get a gas can. When he returned back to the group, he told them he was going to burn the old man's cabin to the ground. After about two more six packs the teens were out for blood. They poured gas all around the cabin and set it ablaze. The teens stood and watched the old man's cabin burn to the ground. They heard the old man screaming from the cabin, "I'm burning, please save me!" The teenagers just laughed and passed the two six packs around until the beer was gone. They tossed their empty beer cans in the fire where the old man's cabin used to sit. Supposedly, one of the teenagers heard the old man say, "If you ever ride down Old Hollow Road in your car, don't look in your rear view mirror. If you do, the old man will get you." 2012-04-20 time of publication of the book, [-Drac Von Stoller-]"
