Here We Are Now

Original Synopsis

"Here We Are Now has a total of 304 pages which are papers from writer 'Jasmine Warga'. A book about love, loss, and the power of music, perfect for fans of Nick Hornby and Fangirl. Taliah Sahar Abdallat lives and breathes music. Songs have always helped Tal ease the pain of never having known her father. Her mother, born in Jordan and very secretive about her past, won’t say a word about who her dad really was. But when Tal finds a shoebox full of old letters from Julian Oliver—yes, the indie rock star Julian Oliver—she begins to piece the story together. She writes to Julian, but after three years of radio silence, she’s given up hope. Then one day, completely out of the blue, Julian shows up at her doorstep, and Tal doesn’t know whether to be furious or to throw herself into his arms. Before she can decide, he asks her to go on a trip with him to meet her long-estranged family and to say good-bye to his father, her grandfather, who is dying. Getting to know your father after sixteen years of estrangement doesn’t happen in one car ride. But as Tal spends more time with Julian and his family, she begins to untangle her parents’ secret past, and discovers a part of herself she never recognized before. By the acclaimed author of My Heart and Other Black Holes, this is an intergenerational story of family and legacy and the way love informs both of those things. It’s about secrets and the debt of silence. It’s about the power of songs. And most of all, it’s about learning how to say hello. And good-bye. 2017-11-07 time of publication of the book, [-HarperCollins-]"

As We Are Now

Original Synopsis

"As We Are Now has a total of 128 pages which are papers from writer 'May Sarton'. A powerful and beautiful novella of one woman, consigned to a dreary retirement home, who wages a defiant battle against the dulling forces around her After seventy-six-year-old Caro Spencer suffers a heart attack, her family sends her to a private retirement home to wait out the rest of her days. Her memory growing fuzzy, Caro decides to keep a journal to document the daily goings-on—her feelings of confinement and boredom; her distrust of the home’s owner, Harriet Hatfield, and her daughter, Rose; her pity for the more incapacitated residents; her resentment of her brother, John, for leaving her alone. The journal entries describe not only her frustrations, but also small moments of beauty—found in a welcome visit from her minister, or in watching a bird in the garden. But as she writes, Caro grows increasingly sensitive to the casual atrocities of retirement-home life. Even as she acknowledges her mind is beginning to fail, she is determined to fight back against the injustices foisted upon the home’s occupants. Well, Here We Are!

Original Synopsis

"Well, Here We Are! has a total of 248 pages which are papers from writer 'J. Beck'. Bans and Bertha Hanson and their children arrived in Mountain Iron, Minnesota, on the Mesabi Iron Range in 1892. John and Hulda Beck and their children arrived there in 1906. After they arrived, both families had more children and both lost some children. The four parents all worked very hard and made very little money. But they had dreams that their surviving children could have more comfortable lives if they could get an education which they had been denied. The two families were brought together in 1922 when the Becks' oldest son married the Hansons' oldest daughter-the first marriage for both families. Well, Here We Are! is a record of what is known about the ancestors and descendants of Bans and Bertha and John and Hulda. It is a remarkable story of how the dreams of four minimally educated people came true, largely as a result of their hard work and sacrifice, but even more because they succeeded in making their children believe in those dreams and passed them on to following generations. 2005-06 time of publication of the book, [-iUniverse-]"

"If You Leave Us Here, We Will Die"

Original Synopsis

""If You Leave Us Here, We Will Die" has a total of 340 pages which are papers from writer 'Geoffrey Robinson'. This is a book about a terrible spate of mass violence. It is also about a rare success in bringing such violence to an end. "If You Leave Us Here, We Will Die" tells the story of East Timor, a half-island that suffered genocide after Indonesia invaded in 1975, and which was again laid to waste after the population voted for independence from Indonesia in 1999. Before international forces intervened, more than half the population had been displaced and 1,500 people killed. Geoffrey Robinson, an expert in Southeast Asian history, was in East Timor with the United Nations in 1999 and provides a gripping first-person account of the violence, as well as a rigorous assessment of the politics and history behind it. Robinson debunks claims that the militias committing the violence in East Timor acted spontaneously, attributing their actions instead to the calculation of Indonesian leaders, and to a "culture of terror" within the Indonesian army. He argues that major powers--notably the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom--were complicit in the genocide of the late 1970s and the violence of 1999. At the same time, Robinson stresses that armed intervention supported by those powers in late 1999 was vital in averting a second genocide. Advocating accountability, the book chronicles the failure to bring those responsible for the violence to justice. A riveting narrative filled with personal observations, documentary evidence, and eyewitness accounts, "If You Leave Us Here, We Will Die" engages essential questions about political violence, international humanitarian intervention, genocide, and transitional justice. 2009-12-24 time of publication of the book, [-Princeton University Press-]"

The Devil I Know

Original Synopsis

"The Devil I Know has a total of 272 pages which are papers from writer 'Claire Kilroy'. In The Devil I Know, award-winning writer Claire Kilroy delivers a delicious novel, a cautionary tale of financial excess set during the Irish property bubble. Tristram St. Lawrence has not been home for years—ever since he missed his mother’s deathbed in favor of going on a bender, the thirteenth Earl of Howth is not welcome in the family castle. Now sober, he lives in self-imposed exile, and his main confidant is his sponsor, a mysterious businessman known only as M. Deauville. One day, when his plane is unexpectedly diverted to Dublin, Tristram ends up where he started, and an old acquaintance, a bully from his school days who’s now making a name in construction, pitches to Tristram an ambitious development project. The trouble is, M. Deauville thinks it’s a good idea, and before Tristram knows it he’s settled in Howth under his father’s baleful gaze and is up to his neck in funding proposals, zoning approvals, and the personal life of his business partner. A wry and timely skewering of a country, a man, and an entire international financial system descended into madness, The Devil I Know establishes Claire Kilroy as a vigorous and wonderful new talent. 2014-02-04 time of publication of the book, [-Grove/Atlantic, Inc.-]"

Who We Are Now

Original Synopsis

"Who We Are Now has a total of 304 pages which are papers from writer 'Sam Roberts'. A revealing view of America and its citizens at the dawn of a new century, by the author of the New York Times Notable Book Who We Are For more than two centuries, America has taken stock every decade, producing a statistical self-portrait of our population. In Who We Are Now, Sam Roberts identifies and illuminates the trends and social shifts changing the face of America today. America is in the midst of a fundamental transformation. The nation's complexion changed significantly over the twentieth century, creating more varied and intermingled identities, and with the baby boomers nearing retirement and their children entering college, the graying of America has been balanced, precariously, by the youth culture. And in the wake of welfare reform in the 1990s, the fate of the working poor has become all the more tenuous. Roberts masterfully weaves stories of individuals from all corners of the country alongside the data from the latest U.S. census, creating a compelling guided tour of the places, personalities, and politics that will shape America as the new century stretches before us. 2013-10-22 time of publication of the book, [-Times Books-]"

The Book of the Elders

Original Synopsis

"The Book of the Elders has a total of 416 pages which are papers from writer ''. In the early part of the fourth century, a few Christians, mostly men and some women, began to withdraw from "the world" to retreat into the desert, there to practice their new religion more seriously. The person who aspired to "renounce the world" first had to find an "elder," a person who would accept him as a disciple and apprentice. To his elder (whom he would address as abba—father) the neophyte owed complete obedience; from his abba, he would receive provisions (as it were) for the road to virtue. In addition to the abba's own example of living, there was the verbal teaching of the elders in sayings and tales, setting out the theory and practice of the eremitic life. In due course, these sayings (or apophthegmata) were written down and, later, collected and codified. The earliest attempts to codify tales and sayings are now lost. As the collection grew, they were first organized alphabetically, according to the name of the abba who spoke them, in a major collection known as the Apophthegmata Patrum Alphabetica. A supplementary collection, the Anonymous Apophthegmata, followed. Later, both collections were combined and arranged systematically rather than alphabetically. This collection was created sometime between 500 and 575 and later went through a couple of major revisions, the second of which appeared sometime before 970. This second revision was published in an excellent new critical edition, with a French translation, in 1993. Now, in The Book of the Elders, John Wortley offers an English translation of this collection, based entirely on the Greek of that text. 2012-05-01 time of publication of the book, [-Liturgical Press-]"

After Eden

Original Synopsis

"After Eden has a total of 194 pages which are papers from writer 'C. M. Houck'. According to scriptural myth the story of the species known as man began with "the man" being expelled from the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:23-24). The journey that "the man" embarked upon was physical life, and every being that has ever been born has continued that journey of self-discovery. This is the simple premise upon which After Eden is structured. Although each poem, verse and entry stands as an individual composition, it is when they are read in sequence that we gradually realize that they are actually relating small parts of a larger multi-faceted picture. Almost reluctantly the attention moves from simplicity and innocence into the sensual frailties and harsh realities encountered with life. The result is a very personal approach to life's experiences as related by one who dares to sometimes question the hollow shibboleths that pass as spiritual insight. Life's diversity is celebrated by this life traveler who is a special blend of pilgrim, vagabond, maverick and seeker of rational belief. He discovers that life's intended destination is found in accepting the universal essences that we each embody. 2004-06-27 time of publication of the book, [-iUniverse-]"

Where We Are Now

Original Synopsis

"Where We Are Now has a total of 200 pages which are papers from writer 'Carolyn Osborn'. Where We Are Now is a collection of stories that Carolyn Osborn has developed over two decades about a single family, the Moores. Marianne, the main narrator of these stories about her mother's family, says, "The truth is sometimes a poor, sad thing — wax fruit melted in an attic, a lone mule wandering on the front lawn, a mute player piano — a few insubstantial fragments. All we could do was grab hold and make something more of them." In the beginning story, "The Greats," her relatives are so distant Marianne can only give brief glimpses of these "eccentric, willful, mysterious Moores." "The Grands," an O. Henry Prize story, first introduced readers to many of the characters who inhabit Where We Are Now. By knowing the Moores, we begin to know Marianne who tries to understand them. Curious as she is, she must continually accept the mystery of reality. Aware of the need for family mythology, she orders her world as best she can with what she is given by reacting, reflecting, inventing and enlarging on the "fragments." Other narrators reveal omissions Marianne can never know. Marianne's life and the lives of the Moores have a definitely southern flavor. They mirror fading nineteenth century morality, an acceptance of eccentricity, a habit of story-telling, a strong consciousness of place, and the influence as well as the particularity of family. These stories are also attempts to show the failures and triumphs of love, the necessity of forgiveness, and the usefulness of different sorts of families. 2014-12-01 time of publication of the book, [-Wings Press-]"
