Sex and Satiric Tragedy in Early Modern England

Original Synopsis

"Sex and Satiric Tragedy in Early Modern England has a total of 158 pages which are papers from writer 'Gabriel A. Rieger'. Drawing upon recent scholarship in Renaissance studies regarding notions of the body, political, physical and social, this study examines how the satiric tragedians of the English Renaissance employ the languages of sex - including sexual slander, titillation, insinuation and obscenity - in the service of satiric aggression. There is a close association between the genre of satire and sexually descriptive language in the period, author Gabriel Rieger argues, particularly in the ways in which both the genre and the languages embody systems of oppositions. In exploring the various purposes which sexually descriptive language serves for the satiric tragedian, Rieger reviews a broad range of texts, ancient, Renaissance, and contemporary, by satiric tragedians, moralists, medical writers and critics, paying particular attention to the works of William Shakespeare, Thomas Middleton and John Webster 2016-12-05 time of publication of the book, [-Routledge-]"

...So, Goodnight Dear and I do Love You

Original Synopsis

"...So, Goodnight Dear and I do Love You has a total of 384 pages which are papers from writer 'Compiled by Diana M. Smith'. I never met my great uncle. I really, only knew his name. His story begins for me with a box of letters and mementos saved by my great aunt. I always knew the box existed, but I had never opened it. My mother would often say, “Oh, those letters are from Lowell during the war. They are so sad.” Well, who would want to read anything that was sad? So, the story of Lowell Read and the true love that he had for my great aunt stayed packed away in a box for 65 years. My father and I came across the box during a spring cleaning frenzy and decided that it was time to read the letters and put them in some type of notebook to preserve them. Little did I know that I was about to become involved in the story of Lowell & Sue Read’s life and unwavering love for each other. As I read each letter and placed them in order, I grew to know and admire both Lowell and Sue. There were other items in the box besides the letters. These items included a small Bible, a set of dog tags, a service medal, a shell bracelet, a small notebook, and numerous other articles. The letters shed light on all these other items and I realized that my great aunt had saved everything because of the special meaning that they held. Lowell ended almost every letter with the words, “So, goodnight Dear and I do love you.” I created this compilation to honor a man I never met and to preserve the memory of a love that never ended. I hope you enjoy reading his letters and getting to know him as much as I did. 2012-05-24 time of publication of the book, [-AuthorHouse-]"

The Adventures of Goodnight and Loving

Original Synopsis

"The Adventures of Goodnight and Loving has a total of 500 pages which are papers from writer 'Leslie Thomas'. When George Goodnight, a lawyer on the staff of a London newspaper, finds his marriage has gone sour, his family holiday is cancelled and his car, broken down on the motorway, has been stolen, he walks through a gate in a fence on a summer's day in the middle of England. What he doesn't know, as he takes his first light steps across the sunlit meadows near the tiny village of Somerbourne Magna, is that he is embarking on a course that will take him far away from the country, the surroundings and the way of life he has always known. He is embarking on a journey that will eventually take him to the other side of the world. As in his earlier books, Arthur McCann and All His Women, Bare Nell and Ormerod's Landing, Leslie Thomas shows himself to be a master of the sustained narrative novel of adventure and romance as he evokes his hero's fitful progress round the world. Along the way George has close encounters with storms at sea and in the air; with poverty and despair; with true love and exotic passion. He spends Christmas in prison, encounters a substitute for the son he never had and tracks down a girl who was swopped at birth for some rare stamps. Always he moves on. Sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious, sometimes alarming, the adventures of George Goodnight and his shadowy alter ego, Oliver Loving, represent stages in what is both a quest for excitement and love and a haunting evocation of what happens when a man starts running away from life and can't stop. The descriptions of the cities and villages George travels to and the extraordinary cast of people he encounters are sparkling and authentic. This long, swirling novel, with comedy in its buttonhole and pathos at its heart, is a tour de force and wonderfully enthralling read. 2011-03-31 time of publication of the book, [-Random House-]"

A Fearful Gentleman

Original Synopsis

"A Fearful Gentleman has a total of 248 pages which are papers from writer 'Roger Downing, Gijs Rommelse'. Sir George Downing first served under the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell as diplomat in the Dutch Republic. Following the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 he transferred his allegiance to the new regime and was re-appointed to the post in The Hague. This period was characterized by fierce trade rivalry, which formed the background to the mid-century Anglo-Dutch wars. His defence of English commercial interests against the Dutch was crucial to his development as one of England's leading mercantilists. "A fearful gentleman" shows that both extremes of Downing's reputation stem from his experience and activities in the Republic: the odium resulting from his rounding up and delivery to their deaths of the new King's former enemies, and acknowledgement of Downing's role as administrator and reformer of English public finance, based on his observation of the more sophisticated Dutch system. 2011 time of publication of the book, [-Uitgeverij Verloren-]"
