Joan Blondell

Original Synopsis

"Joan Blondell has a total of 312 pages which are papers from writer 'Matthew Kennedy'. Joan Blondell: A Life between Takes is the first major biography of the effervescent, scene-stealing actress (1906-1979) who conquered motion pictures, vaudeville, Broadway, summer stock, television, and radio. Born the child of itinerant vaudevillians, she was on stage by age three. With her casual sex appeal, distinctive cello voice, megawatt smile, luminous saucer eyes, and flawless timing, she came into widespread fame in Warner Bros. musicals and comedies of the 1930s, including Blonde Crazy, Gold Diggers of 1933, and Footlight Parade. Frequent co-star to James Cagney, Clark Gable, Edward G. Robinson, and Humphrey Bogart, friend to Judy Garland, Barbara Stanwyck, and Bette Davis, and wife of Dick Powell and Mike Todd, Joan Blondell was a true Hollywood insider. By the time of her death, she had made nearly 100 films in a career that spanned over fifty years. Privately, she was unerringly loving and generous, while her life was touched by financial, medical, and emotional upheavals. Meticulously researched, expertly weaving the public and private, and featuring numerous interviews with family, friends, and colleagues, Joan Blondell: A Life Between Takes traces the changing face of Twentieth Century American entertainment through the career of this extraordinary actress. 2009-09-28 time of publication of the book, [-Univ. Original Synopsis

"Double-Takes has a total of 366 pages which are papers from writer 'David R. Jarraway'. Over the past forty years, Canadian literature has found its way to the silver screen with increasing regularity. Beginning with the adaptation of Margaret Laurence’s A Jest of God to the Hollywood film Rachel, Rachel in 1966, Canadian writing would appear to have found a doubly successful life for itself at the movies: from the critically acclaimed Kamouraska and The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz in the 1970s through to the award-winning Love and Human Remains and The English Patient in the 1990s. With the more recent notoriety surrounding the Oscar-nominated Away from Her, and the screen appearances of The Stone Angel and Fugitive Pieces, this seems like an appropriate time for a collection of essays to reflect on the intersection between literary publication in Canada, and its various screen transformations. This volume discusses and debates several double-edged issues: the extent to which the literary artefact extends its artfulness to the film artefact, the degree to which literary communities stand to gain (or lose) in contact with film communities, and perhaps most of all, the measure by which a viable relation between fiction and film can be said to exist in Canada, and where that double-life precisely manifests itself, if at all. 2013-05-25 time of publication of the book, [-University of Ottawa Press-]"

It Takes Two to Do Science

Original Synopsis

"It Takes Two to Do Science has a total of 201 pages which are papers from writer 'Henri Eisendrath, Jean Paul Van Bendegem'. The New York Times of December 7. 2008 had a wonderful piece by business columnist Janet Rae-Dupree. entitled "Teamwork the true mother of invention". She started her article thus: "Despite the enduring myth of the lone genius. Innovation does not take place in isolation". "The best innovations occur when you have networks of people with diverse backgrounds gathering around a problem." said Robert Fishkin. President and Chief Executive of Reframeit. In fact these were the same basic ideas Henri Eisendrath and Jean Paul Van Bendegem had when at the end of the last century. they initiated a series of interdisciplinary study groups and workshops for young researchers at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Once a month, these interdisciplinary seminars brought together VUB professors who came to present the aims, importance. Successes and difficulties of the work their research teams were engaged in. The series comprised eleven contributions, providing a balanced image of research done at the VUB. The titles of these contributions (see contents) clearly reveal that the subjects presented originate from very different fields of study. The discussions very often involved not just specialists in the specific research activity. but also Ph.D. students from other fields. The original intention of the editors of this volume was not merely to present the contributions by the scientists themselves. but also to summarize the discussions that followed However, this proved to be a formidable task and severely risked resulting in a skewed summary that would not do justice to the speaker or the audience present. The editors hope that this book will serve as a catalyst for (young) scientists to understand the importance of teamwork and to enjoy its benefits. 2009 time of publication of the book, [-ASP / VUBPRESS / UPA-]"

It Takes a Genome

Original Synopsis

"It Takes a Genome has a total of 208 pages which are papers from writer 'Greg Gibson'. Human beings have astonishing genetic vulnerabilities. More than half of us will die from complex diseases that trace directly to those vulnerabilities, and the modern world we’ve created places us at unprecedented risk from them. In It Takes a Genome, Greg Gibson posits a revolutionary new hypothesis: Our genome is out of equilibrium, both with itself and its environment. Simply put, our genes aren’t coping well with modern culture. Our bodies were never designed to subsist on fat and sugary foods; our immune systems weren’t designed for today’s clean, bland environments; our minds weren’t designed to process hard-edged, artificial electronic inputs from dawn ‘til midnight. And that’s why so many of us suffer from chronic diseases that barely touched our ancestors. Gibson begins by revealing the stunningly complex ways in which multiple genes cooperate and interact to shape our bodies and influence our behaviors. Then, drawing on the very latest science, he explains the genetic “mismatches” that increasingly lead to cancer, diabetes, inflammatory and infectious diseases, AIDS, depression, and senility. He concludes with a look at the probable genetic variations in human psychology, sharing the evidence that traits like introversion and agreeableness are grounded in equally complex genetic interactions. It Takes A Genome demolishes yesterday’s stale debates over “nature vs. nurture,” introducing a new view that is far more intriguing, and far closer to the truth. See how broken genes cause cancer Meet the body’s “genetic repairmen”—and understand what happens when they fail The growing price of the modern lifestyle Why one-third of all Westerners have obesity, Type 2 diabetes, or other signs of “metabolic syndrome” The Alzheimer’s generation Why some of us are predisposed to dementia What’s really normal: the deepest lessons of the human genome The remarkable diversity of physical and emotional “normality” 2008-12-24 time of publication of the book, [-FT Press-]"

Original Synopsis

"The Halakhah: Between Israel and God, Part B has a total of 482 pages which are papers from writer 'Jacob Neusner'. The Halakhah embodies the complete Jewish Law, and contains commandments and guidelines for day-to-day living. The original commandments given by God to the Jewish people were enhanced by rabbis to offer a detailed framework to guide the lives of all Jews. In this complete, all-encompassing encyclopaedia of the Halakhah, the various laws are classified in such a way that a systematic and coherent structure is obtained. Each entry of the Halakhah is presented in a logical fashion. Where applicable, the original biblical wording is given, extended with literal abstracts from the Torah. Next, problems and questions that may arise from that law are stated and any additional information given. Finally, each entry gives comprehensive explanations and recommendations as to how these laws are to be observed in daily life where to be and where not to be, what to do and what not to do, what to say and what not to say. The Halakhah, or standard Jewish Law, combines the Mishnah (about 200 CE), the Tosefta (about 300 CE), and the two Talmuds (about 400, 600 CE for the Land of Israel and Babylon, respectively). Volumes I and II contain entries pertaining to the Jewish people in relationship to God. Volume III explains how the Jewish people can restore and maintain their society in accordance with the Torah as it is explained by the rabbis. In Volumes IV and V of this study, we take up the life of the Jewish household in their encounter with God. The Encyclopaedic account therefore moves from regulating relationships between Israel and God to establishing stable and equitable relationships among Israelites and finally to actually living the Halakhah. 2000 time of publication of the book, [-BRILL-]"
